Certificate Limitations

• Command of a vessel up to a maximum length of 78 ft /24 meters as part of a flotilla
• In coastal waters up to 20 miles offshore
• In fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions

• Most charter agencies will insist on daylight hours as a condition to charter.

Entry Standard

• Should be 16 years of age or over
• Candidates with prior experience that equates to competency in Modules 1 – 11 may skip these modules and proceed to Module 12 (VHF-SRC) through Module 25.
• Candidates who hold a recognized VHF-SRC CoC may skip Module 12 (VHF-SRC)
• The candidate must have logged over 200 nautical miles & 10 days at sea by the end of the course.

Course Description:

The 24M Powerboat Skipper Certification Course is an intensive program designed for individuals aspiring to become competent powerboat skippers, capable of handling power vessels up to 24 meters in length. This course provides a comprehensive certificate of competency that enables candidates to navigate in fair weather conditions and within sight of land.

The course spans a duration of five days, during which candidates will acquire the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to skipper a powerboat effectively. The theoretical portion of the course aligns with the depth of knowledge required for the International Bareboat Skipper Certificate. To obtain the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency, candidates must also have logged over 200 nautical miles and spent at least 10 days at sea by the end of the course.

The training emphasizes the level of competence necessary for chartering a boat in regions like the Mediterranean or West Indies, where specific restrictions on cruising areas and distance from the base apply. Candidates will learn essential skills such as safely mooring in marinas, anchoring before dark, and navigating within prescribed boundaries.

To enroll in this course, candidates must either possess a recognized VHF Radio Operators Certificate or complete the full IYT VHF-SRC Marine Communications course, which is included in the curriculum. When ordering the Powerboat Skipper Certificate of Competency, the school will also place an order for the VHF certificate. It is important to note that ISSA VHF qualifications are not accepted.

Upon successfully obtaining the Powerboat Skipper qualification, candidates will automatically be eligible to obtain the "International Certificate of Competency Power <24M" (ICC) as per the requirements set by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Resolution 40). The ICC opens doors to various international cruising opportunities and destinations.

Service Description

This is a one-day theory and practical course designed to cover the requirements for the safe operation and maintenance of a Personal Watercraft. As well as the theory component, the instruction will emphasize the practical applications of handling a PWC on the water.

Certificate and Limitations:

Upon successful completion of the International Bareboat Skipper Course, you will receive a Certificate of Competency allowing you to command vessels up to 24 meters in length. This certification is recognized by most charter agencies. However, please note the limitations of this certificate:

• Navigation limited to coastal waters within 20 miles offshore
• Suitable for fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions

Power or Sail Endorsements:

If you undertake this course on a sailboat and later wish to obtain the International Bareboat Skipper Power, you can attend any IYT Partner school approved to offer the International Bareboat Skipper Power course and undergo power training (Module 14 in the Passport Training Programme). Similarly, if you undertake this course on a power vessel and later desire the International Bareboat Skipper Sail qualification, you can attend any IYT Partner school approved to offer the International Bareboat Skipper Sail course and undergo sail training (Module 15 in the Passport Training Programme). The duration of these additional training modules will depend on your experience as a skipper in the respective vessel type.

STCW 2010 requires a Refresher in Survival at Sea and Fire Fighting every 5 years. This is carried out over 4 days Wednesday to Saturday.

The STCW came into effect to standardize training around the world. The STCW Basic Safety Training Certification is required by all seafarers who are working onboard commercial ships or superyachts.

IYT Marine Communications is designed to ensure a thorough understanding of radio communication at sea. It is intended for all marine environments and follows International standards.

The course provides VHF Radio and SRC training for the entire spectrum of VHF radio communications for recreational and professional boating. Students will learn how on board radios and handheld radios, EPIRBs, SARTs, AIS and DSC-enabled radios, are used effectively in marine communications.

The STCW 95 Personal Survival Techniques (sea survival course) module provides knowledge of essential prevention and survival techniques.

It includes both theoretical and practical sessions, investigating causes of distress, knowledge and use of equipment, launch and recovery of life rafts, preparation for survival, personal survival skills and use of search and rescue organisations.

The STCW95/2010 Personal Survival Techniques course forms a key part of the STCW Basic Safety Training course, which comprises the essential certifications you will require if entering the maritime industry for the first time. Please ask us about the full course if you require further details.

This course contains some exercises that are physically demanding. All candidates must be able to swim and tread water.

The PST course covers:

The STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher is the refresher training of the STCW Advanced Fire Fighting course, which needs to be taken every 5 years. Taking this course, the participant remains familiar and updated with fire fighting skills and techniques.

The STCW Advanced Fire Fighting Refresher course is for those who are at sea and in charge of firefighting and rescue operations on board of a vessel. Also, it is the STCW Advanced Fire Fighting a compulsory training for officers.

Master of 200 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore. The theory portion of the MOY 200T is a 5-6 day classroom course, consisting of both assessment papers and written examinations.

Prior study and practical experience is required before the start of the test (listed below). Students shouldn’t expect to learn everything in one week without prior study.

Minimum entry requirements:

• One must hold or obtain a Marine Communications VHF-SRC Radio
  Operators certificate.
• One must hold or obtain all STCW’10 certificates. STCW certificates must be valid (not expired).
• Candidates must provide documented evidence of boating experience as stated below:
• Logged 50 days on board a yacht at sea as an active crew member on watch. For the purpose of this requirement, a day is defined as a period of 24 consecutive hours. The term “at sea” is defined as being on a vessel outside of any harbor – natural or artificial – in which a cruising yacht could secure or anchor for a prolonged period of time.
• Logged 3,000 miles in a yacht while cruising at sea (power or sail). This must be on genuine cruises or passages, not short day trips. The candidate must have considerable time of actual vessel handling.
• Thirty hours on watch at night underway as an active member of a yacht’s crew.
• A current medical fitness examination and a color blindness eyesight examination, which allows the participant to safely perform the relevant duties on a yacht. Medical/eyesight examinations are valid for a period of two years.

IYT will also accept military letters stating service days for sea time, however, each will be reviewed to ensure they have sufficient experience for the level of certificate they are requesting.

Please Note: A candidate may take both endorsements, however, it is highly recommended that he or she have some hands-on practical experience and sea time on both power and sailing vessels before attempting the exam. The practical exam is not the forum for learning basic skills. Candidates may sit the shore-based course prior to having all the above requirements. Verification of the above yachting experience must be original and signed by the skipper of the yacht in which the candidate was sailing. Candidates claiming sea time during times when they were acting as skipper may sign their own entries but independent verification may be required.

The Practical portion of the MOY limited will allow students to work as Master of a 200 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore.

The Practical portion of the MOY limited is a 5 day course, with a 6th day exam. This will allow students to learn and execute skills and knowledge in areas such as situational awareness, seamanship as well as the ability to command. This is your final preparation for the final examination which will take place once the week is completed.

• Master of 200 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore
• Chief Mate of 500 ton vessel up to 150 nautical miles offshore
• Chief Mate of 200 ton vessel all oceans
• OOW (Officer of the Watch) of a 500 ton vessel all oceans.

This Course and Certificate are also created for those candidates who hold the "Boat Master Level 2 Certificates of Competency" and wish to become engineer on vessels operating under the SCV code on v.

This is a 5 day course, depending on wind and conditions, aimed to deliver a safe, informed, confident and competent day sailor/skipper who can confidently command or work as crew on a sailboat.

• Command a vessel up to a maximum length of 10 meters (32.8 feet)
• Inland waters (bay or lake sailing) or coastal waters up to 5 miles offshore
• Daylight hours and in fair conditions with moderate wind and sea conditions

This License is to operate small commercial vessels in the Caribbean Region. The regulations are based on the United States Coast Guard Code of Federal Regulations 46 Sub-Chapter T (certification of small passenger vessels), which are regarded as equivalent to IMO Convention requirements for such vessels, Sub-Chapter C (Uninspected vessels) and The United Kingdom Code of Practice for the Safety of Small Workboats and Pilot Boats.

The certificates issued by MSWI are endorsed by the Sint Maarten Maritime Authority and are valid for 5 years.
